Prisoners
Ever since the inception of The Islamic Republic of Iran (IRI), countless numbers of Iranians were arrested and tortured. It is estimated that 40 thousand Iranians were executed, for expressing their dissent by writing articles, participating in events and demonstrations, by their choice of religion or political party. Iran does not recognize, and has no regard for The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, of which it is in grave violation.
Regrettably, there are no official records to determine the precise number of those arrested and/or imprisoned, many, if not most, without credible evidence against them. Innocent people are victimized and/or sent to their death. The IRI does not hesitate to utilize scare tactics and intimidation to terrorize the detainee’s family, all of whom are at the mercy of the Iranian government. These strategies are used by the IRI to keep family members from going public with their authentic concerns.
The following is a compilation of names collected by former prisoners as well as media. It is well worth noting that one can attribute the infrequent release of prisoners to the hearings and proceedings which took place in the infamous Kangaroo courts established throughout Iran.
This compilation is a time consuming, dynamic work-in-progress---a cause worth the time and effort. We look forward to hearing from you, the reader, and we welcome any suggestions and corrections, as well as factual additions to this valuable list.
We would like to thank our volunteers who have worked hard in assembling, translating and converting the list to a searchable database.
We would like to thank in particular Laleh Gilani, Sima Ashrafnia, Gigi Nikpour and all those who would like not to be named.
Our special thanks further goes to Saeed Pourheydar and his team.
We also would like to thank the volunteers of Rahana and Herana and many more who have endangered their lives or may have been jailed themselves by reporting.
